Email Marketing Best Practices For Top Efficiency

You’re probably aware that most people now spend more time on their email than they do many other tasks.  That makes email one of the most useful ways to get information out to existing customers, prospective customers, and interested visitors.  However, it’s easy to do email marketing wrong.  Come on too strong, or fail to reach your audience, and your efforts are wasted.  Here are some email marketing best practices that’ll help you get your email marketing campaign right.

Stay Out Of The Spam Filters
Most ISPs now use pretty rigorous spam filters to keep unsolicited email out of customer inboxes.  There are a number of criteria used to rank email, and if a mail accumulates too many points, it’ll be flagged as spam.  How do you avoid racking up “spam points”?  Avoid words like save, discounts, free, and excessive use of dollar signs, both in the content and the subject line.  That’ll keep your message out of the spam filters.

Maximize Your Click Through Rates
Most emails and webpages now have a lot of graphics and text.  This may be eye catching, but it actually makes it harder to get your subscribers to click through to your special offers.  There are lots of research papers out there that tell us that most users respond better to a plain old text link than they do to a button or banner.  So, make your links blue, bold, and underlined, but don’t make them an image.  You’ll get better results.

Personalize It!
Personalization makes people pay attention.  Use your subscriber’s name and you’ll increase click through and reading rates by more than six hundred percent.  That’s because subscribers will feel like they have a relationship with you.

Make It Easy To Unsubscribe
If that sounds like something that wouldn’t help your email marketing, think again.  To make your mailing list grow, you want it to be full of happy readers who would recommend you.  Make it easy to get off the mailing list by clicking a single link, and make the process of opting out a pleasant and courteous one.  That’ll leave even the people who decide your mailing list isn’t for them with a good opinion of you.

Signup Confirmation
Make sure you’re never accused of spamming.  To do that, always use what’s called a double opt in process.  After the visitor enters his or her email to subscribe, send a confirmation mail with a link back to the program.  That will confirm that the visitor signed him or herself up, not someone trying to fill your mailing list with names.

Mail Out At The Right Time
Online research analysis studies say that the best days to do a mail out are Tuesday and Wednesday.  People are much more interested in communication on these days, and are more likely to click on your links.  That’s because everyone’s still recovering from the weekend on Monday, and by Thursday or Friday, they’re looking forward to the next ones.  Sending out mail about mid afternoon has been shown to help, too.
