PPC search engine internet advertising stands for pay per click advertising on internet search engines. It is a popular advertising strategy used by individuals or businesses that want to get internet exposure on Google, Yahoo, or MSN. The ppc model is a fairly simple model, to explain it let’s deconstruct a fairly simple scenario:

A user goes to a popular search engine eg: google and searches for some content regarding tickets to a local festival. Off to the right side of the natural or organic search results is a set of sponsored advertisements linking to a few local ticket booking websites.

To start with we have an end user (the person surfing the internet), an advertiser (the ticket booking service) and the search engine. The way the PPC model works is that the advertiser pays the search engine a certain amount of money to have an advertisement show up when certain keywords are typed into the search engine. When a user clicks on that advertisement a certain amount of money is deducted from the advertisers account and paid to the search engine. Hence the term pay per click. In other words, the advertiser is paying for every click or visit to his website via the search engines.

The way the advertiser makes money is two fold:
1. Traffic/People are drawn toward the content that the advertiser has advertised. If he buys advertisements or traffic for very specific keyword phrases, then the quality of the traffic will be very high, thus producing more customers.
2. The advertiser only pays for traffic when a person clicks on his ad to visit the website.

The way the search engine makes money is also two fold:
1. The keywords that a search engine usually makes available for sale to advertisers is sold using an auction model, hence the more desirable a keyword or set of keywords the more it would be worth.
2. If the search engine has a large set of advertisers associated with it, then the more relevant it’s results, the better the experience it provides for the search engine users.

The end user also benefits by arriving at whatever information he/she needed fairly easily.
